Clare-kebobs, yum?
Injured, Clare falls to the ground, leaving Sid and Galk to deal with the massive yoma. However, as it charges, they find themselves unable to respond in time. Fortunately, Clare rises and thows a dagger through the yoma's eye, and proceeds to battle it while trying to protect the human men. Unfortunately, her attempts to defend them cause her to let her guard down, and the yoma pieces her through the torso with its extendable fingers moments after shattering Galk's sword with its bare hands. It holds Clare aloft and then tosses her aside, but is driven away by an approaching squad of every available soldier in the cathedral as they respond to the commotion.

Despite Sid's protests, Galk carries Clare out of the room, stating that he owes her his life, even if she is half-monster.

The next morning, Raki awakes to find Clare is still missing. His attempt to find her is interrupted by Sid, who comes to retrieve him and give him the chance to say his goodbyes, as Clare is not expected to live. He brings Raki to the cathedral, where Vincent has bandaged her (over her clothes!) and set her out to rest, or to die. Sid doesn't see the problem, claiming it's just a case of monsters and half-breeds killing one another... which rouses Raki's wrath again and earns Sid a punch to the face. Which he probably deserved, let's be real.

Maybe he'll convert soon.
Unfortunately for Raki, this turns into a fight that Raki definitely can't win, and after knocking Raki on his butt, Sid leaves to return to his post. This leaves Galk to comfort the crying Raki, saying that he won't let her die before he's repaid her for saving him. Faith, he says, in the only way to help her.

Two days later, Raki still lingers by Clare's bedside, apparently in prayer. This is when Clare finally wakes, apologizing for inconveniencing Father Vincent, and saying that she has a request.

Notes and Comments

This is not proper medical protocol, just saying.
01. The may seem odd that Vincent has bandaged Clare over her clothes... and in fact it is strange. At the time, in this chapter, he explains that he doesn't understand her physiology well enough to tend her properly... but the truth comes out 100 or so chapters later when he admits that, when he initially removed her clothing to treat her, he was so disturbed by her stigmata that he chose to bandage her over her outfit rather than deal with her bare flesh.

02. Does Raki's prayer indicate a growing faith in the god of Rabona? Who knows, but apparently Clare took a bit of their religion to heart as well, as she prays for Raki's safety some chapters later, when they're separated by Ophelia.
